Shell-OS Version 32-64 bit

Preface

In some cases it’s needed to identify Linux OS version if its 32 bit or 64 bit. One of the way how to perform this test will be described in this sort document.

Is Linux 32 or 64 bit

To get relevant test result you can use this command:

# /usr/bin/file /usr/bin/file                                   # Simple test command

32 bit Example

# /usr/bin/file /usr/bin/file
/usr/bin/file: ELF 32-bit LSB executable, x86, version 1 (SYSV), dynamically linked (uses shared libs), for GNU/Linux X.X.xxx, BuildID[sha1]=0000, stripped

64 bit Example

# /usr/bin/file /usr/bin/file
/usr/bin/file: ELF 64-bit LSB executable, x86-64, version 1 (SYSV), dynamically linked (uses shared libs), for GNU/Linux X.X.xxx, BuildID[sha1]=0000, stripped
